Objective

  • Give infielders practice at properly judging and recovering short hops.

Equipment

  • Baseballs (6-8)
  • Base/Throw-downs
  • Gloves

Description

  • In partners, position players 15-20 feet apart.
  • The feeder throws the ball just short of the infielder's feet.
  • The infielder fields the short hop, applies the tag and flips the ball to the side.

Tips

  • The feeder must throw the ball with some velocity just out of the reach of the infielder.
  • The infielder must stay low to the ground keeping his head behind the ball.
  • The key to this drill is keeping the infielders hands extended, and as the ball is approaching, cushion the ball and apply the tag.
  • Vary the lengths of the short hops and move the ball from side to side.
  • Another, more simplified version of this drill is the Tag Drill.
