This drill is designed to increase a player's awareness of the outfield fence when tracking down line drives hit into the gaps.
Done properly, this drill will allow an outfielder to become familiar with the various bounces and hops an outfield fence can put on a ball.
This drill is also designed to improve an outfielder's quickness and footwork around the fence area.
Equipment
Gloves
Baseballs (10 - 12)
Fungo
Any field is fine but an actual outfield with a fence is the best.
Description
Divide players into groups of 5-6. Find an area that has some sort of fence (the outfield wall or a backstop works great.)
Line up players approximately 15-20 feet away from the fence and have them face the coach (coach can stand 10-15 feet in front of players).
Coach throws/hits a ground ball, leading the player towards the fence. The job of the outfielder is to simply play the ball off the fence and throw it to the cutoff man (in this case the coach or player who is standing beside the fungo hitter).
Tips
Teach players to get to the ball as quickly as possible, break down and make an accurate throw (for the purpose of this drill, players do not need to throw the ball hard).
Make sure players are already in motion before hitting the ball (this will help to simulate a game situation where an outfielder is tracking down the ball hit by him into the gap).
An outfielder's first step should be a drop step (at a 45 degree angle) with their ball side leg.
