Objective

  • Give infielders an opportunity to practice charging slow rolling ground balls and making throws while off-balance.

Equipment

  • Bat/Fungo
  • Gloves
  • Baseballs (3-4)
  • Bases / Throwdowns

Description

  • Organize infielders in a line at a particular position...first, second, third... (this drill will work at all infield positions).
  • Have a coach stand beside the pitcher's mound and hit/roll slow ground balls to each player - one at a time.
  • The infielder's job is to charge the ball, break down, pick up the ball and make an accurate throw to the first baseman.
  • After the player makes the throw, he should return to the end of the line for another turn.

Tips

  • Give players a lot of repetitions and allow them opportunities to field balls with and without their glove.
  • Teach players to stay low and keep their glove near the ground.
  • Allow players to experience a wide range of arm angles while throwing.
  • Instruction tip: tell players to aim 2-3 feet left of the target; this will compensate for the tail of the ball resulting from a lowered arm angle.
