This is a great drill for developing hand-eye coordination and bat speed. It also requires some sort of screen for safety, however.
Equipment
L-Screen
Baseballs (6-10)
Baseball bat
Description
This drill is quite similar to underhand bp, however, all the throws are delivered overhand.
The coach/pitcher is positioned on a chair or bucket behind an L-Screen approximately 6-10 feet away from the hitter.
The pitcher tosses the ball at an appropriate speed into the hitter (working all areas of the hitting zone).
After hitters have had 10-15 quality swings, rotate them into the field to help gather balls.
Tips
Since the pitcher is so close to the hitter during this drill, make sure the pitcher remains completely behind the screen throughout the entire delivery (don't be afraid to throw on a helmet).
Have one or two hitters on deck warming up to speed the drill up.
The pitcher should keep his delivery consistent so the hitter can work on timing.
