Objective

  • This drill provides young players with an opportunity to practice running out singles, doubles, and triples.
  • This drill also focuses on getting runners to pick up base coaches for pass balls and stretching out extra base hits.

Equipment

  • Baseball Diamond
  • Bases / Throwdowns
  • Cones

Description

  • Organize players into one line at home plate. 
    Each player takes a phantom swing and runs out of the box heading for first base.
  • Progressions are as follows:
    • Single - straight through the bag (Video 1)
    • Straight through the bag - pass ball (Video 2)
    • Single - agressive turn in (Video 3)
    • Double - stand up (Video 4)
    • Double - pick up coach and hold (Video 5)
    • Triple - stand up (Video 6)

Tips

  • Emphasize to runner to touch the bases properly (see Skill Outline)
  • This is a good drill to do at the end of a practice because of the conditioning factor.
  • Timing is a major factor when teaching kids to run through this drill properly.
  • Be sure to pay close attention to when runners should leave home plate for each progression to avoid players running into one another.
