Objective

  • Isolate the hands during the swinging motion.
  • This will force the hitter to react quickly and develop a short stroke.
  • This drill also forces the hitter to stay balanced and keep a firm lower base.

Equipment

  • Bats
  • 6-10 Baseballs
  • Sock Screen / Fence

Description

  • This is a more advanced drill that may not be effective with younger players.
  • Players can do this in pairs or in groups of three.
  • Have players find an area next to a screened fence or the side of a batting cage.
  • Players can set up as they would with regular soft toss, however, this time the coach/player tosses balls at a much quicker pace (one after another).
  • After the hitter has had 10-15 quality swings, get the players to switch.

Tips

  • The balls should be accurately tossed with little or no arc.
  • The pitcher should keep the delivery consistent so the hitter can find his/her timing.
  • The pitcher should have three balls in hand to make the transfer of the baseballs easier.
