To improve communication between pitchers and catchers during a standard bunt situation with no runners on.
This drill is also good for improving comunication between pitchers and catchers during weakly hit ground balls.
Equipment
Baseballs (2 - 3).
Fungo
2 Cones
Description
Pitcher stands on the mound and goes through his motion (without a ball).
Once pitcher completes motion, coach (who is standing in the batters box) rolls a ball out in front of the catcher, simulating a bunt or weakly hit ground ball.
The job of the pitcher and catcher is to determine who will field the ball and make the throw to first base.
Player who gets to the ball as quckly as possible should make the throw (this person should be yelling, "Ball Ball Ball" to call off the other player.
Tips
Coach should ensure that players get practice communicating for various different types of bunts and weakly hit ground balls (deep, shallow, wide left, and wide right).
Do not allow catchers to cheat out of the crouch. It is important to practice the drill as close to "game reality" as possible.
