Objective

  • To improve communication between pitchers and catchers during a standard bunt situation with no runners on.
  • This drill is also good for improving comunication between pitchers and catchers during weakly hit ground balls.

Equipment

  • Baseballs (2 - 3).
  • Fungo
  • 2 Cones

Description

  • Pitcher stands on the mound and goes through his motion (without a ball).
  • Once pitcher completes motion, coach (who is standing in the batters box) rolls a ball out in front of the catcher, simulating a bunt or weakly hit ground ball.
  • The job of the pitcher and catcher is to determine who will field the ball and make the throw to first base.
  • Player who gets to the ball as quckly as possible should make the throw (this person should be yelling, "Ball Ball Ball" to call off the other player.

Tips

  • Coach should ensure that players get practice communicating for various different types of bunts and weakly hit ground balls (deep, shallow, wide left, and wide right).
  • Do not allow catchers to cheat out of the crouch. It is important to practice the drill as close to "game reality" as possible.
