Objective

  • Increase reaction time through repetition. Develop consistency of receiving the baseball.

Equipment

  • Pitching machine
  • Baseballs / machine baseballs
  • Extension cord.
  • Catching equipment

Description

  • Set up a pitching machine in front of the pitchers mound, approximately 15 to twenty feet away from home plate.
  • The catcher starts in their regular position to receive the ball.
    • Phase 1: The catcher sets up behind the plate while the feeder of the machine places six to eight baseballs in succession.
    • Phase 2: The catcher sets up on the plate for six to eight baseballs.
    • Phase 3: The catcher sets up two to three feet in front of the plate

Tips

  • At the beginning of each phase, allow the catcher to receive a couple of baseballs before the rapid fire.
  • An adjustment of the machine may need to be done after each phase so the baseball is in the strike zone.
  • Start the speed of the baseball at slow and continue to increase the speed as the players become comfortable with the drill
