To understand the importance of communication with the first baseman.
To understand the importance of clearing a throwing lane to first base.
Equipment
Catcher's Gear (0ptional)
10-12 baseballs
Description
Catchers will start in the ready position behind the plate facing the infield.
From behind, coach tosses balls to all angles in fair territory (designating which base the ball is to be thrown to).
Balls can also be thrown with a verbal cue to any position in foul territory, simulating a pass ball or wild pitch.
Tips
The throwing hand should be used to scoop the ball into the glove if the ball is still rolling. If the ball has stopped moving, only the throwing hand should be used.
The ball should be driven down and twisted into the ground when it is picked up to ensure that a good grip is obtained.
No matter what the position of the ball, the catcher should square his shoulders to the target before throwing. This will alleviate tail on the ball and promote an accurate throw.
The first 20 degrees of fair territory on the third base line require a reverse pivot to throw to first base. This speeds up the process of squaring the shoulders towards the target.
The catcher should be very vocal, so everyone knows where he is throwing and to what side of the first base the first baseman needs to stand.
Coach should try to increase difficulty as the drill goes on.
Full distance for throwing is not needed. It's the angles that are important
