Objective

  • To work on cushioning the ball in a soft yet firm manner.
  • To work on watching the ball all the way into your hand.
  • To learn to “frame” a pitch

Equipment

  • Baseballs / Wiffle, Sponge and/or tennis balls
  • Catching equipment

Description

  • Partner will stand 4 feet away and subjects will toss ball back and forth to each other using their catching hand.
  • See who can last the longest passing the ball back and forth while trying to challenge each other

Tips

  • Subject should try to catch baseballs softly with only their glove hand.
  • Framing should involve subtle movements or none at all.
  • Subjects should always try and stay “on top of the ball”
  • If the glove hand has to be turned over the pitch should be too low to be a strike
  • Most important thing in this drill is to catch the ball.
  • Young catchers should become confident in catching without their glove
  • To start have a partners facing each other 4-5 feet apart then use a spongy ball or a tennis ball will make reception more difficult as it is more likely for the ball to bounce out of the subjects hand if concentration levels are not high.
