To work on cushioning the ball in a soft yet firm manner.
To work on watching the ball all the way into your hand.
To learn to “frame” a pitch
Equipment
Baseballs / Wiffle, Sponge and/or tennis balls
Catching equipment
Description
Partner will stand 4 feet away and subjects will toss ball back and forth to each other using their catching hand.
See who can last the longest passing the ball back and forth while trying to challenge each other
Tips
Subject should try to catch baseballs softly with only their glove hand.
Framing should involve subtle movements or none at all.
Subjects should always try and stay “on top of the ball”
If the glove hand has to be turned over the pitch should be too low to be a strike
Most important thing in this drill is to catch the ball.
Young catchers should become confident in catching without their glove
To start have a partners facing each other 4-5 feet apart then use a spongy ball or a tennis ball will make reception more difficult as it is more likely for the ball to bounce out of the subjects hand if concentration levels are not high.
