Objective

  • This is a great drill for giving players a lot of quality swings, however, requires some sort of screen for safety.
  • This drill is also a good way to practice hitting off-speed pitches (see video 2)

Equipment

  • Baseballs 10-15)
  • L-Screen
  • Bats

Description

  • The coach/pitcher is positioned on a chair or bucket behind an L-Screen approximately 6-10 feet away from the hitter.
  • The pitcher lobs the ball at an appropriate speed into the hitter (working all areas of the hitting zone).
  • After hitters have had 10-15 quality swings, rotate them into the field to help gather balls.

Tips

  • Since the pitcher is so close to the hitter during this drill, make sure the pitcher remains completely behind the screen throughout the entire delivery (don't be afraid to throw on a helmet).
  • To practice hitting curveballs, feeder can lob every other ball using higher arc and more top spin (see video 2).
  • Have one or two hitters on deck warming up to go in once the player at the plate is done.
  • Make sure the hitter is not lunging towards the ball.
  • The pitcher should keep the delivery consistent so the hitter can work on timing.
