Objective
- Improve the technique of sliding into bases.
Equipment
- Sliding Mat
- Base
Description
- Place the mat into an open field and have the players slide onto the mat.
- Have players line up in a single file approximately 10 to 15 feet away.
- Have one play at a time run and complete the slide.
Tips
For all sliding techniques, the coach can shorten the "run up" distance to slow the players down to focus on technique of the slide then slowly increase the speed of the players after they are comfortable.
- Bent Leg Slide:
- Make sure the players have their hands in the air to avoid injury.
- Stay low throughout the approach of the slide to decrease the amount of impact with the ground. (Video 1)
- Head First Slide:
- Make sure the players stay low throughout the slide. This will decrease the impact when hitting the ground. (Video 2)
- Pop - Up Slide:
- Keep your momentum moving into the base, while at the same time pushing up through the bottom leg. This will propel the player into the bag and to a standing position. (Video 3)
