Objective

  • Give infielders practice catching a ball from home plate and applying a quick tag.
  • Provide infielders with an opportunity to learn two different types of tags (swipe and slap).

Equipment

  • Baseballs (6-8)
  • Base/Throw-downs
  • Gloves

Description

  • In partners, players stand facing each other approximately 10-15 feet apart (one player acts as the feeder, the other acts as the infielder).
  • Feeder throws the ball towards the infielder (ball should be thrown just above the bag) who then receives the ball and applies the tag all in one motion.
  • After applying the tag, infielder flips the ball back to the feeder and the drill is continued.

Tips

  • To simulate game speed, feeder should throw the ball with some velocity.
  • At first, coaches should remind players to catch the ball before making the tag. Over time, the sequence of the two should develop into one motion.
  • The feeder can vary the location of the throws to challenge the infielder.
  • Have the infielder start off the bag, then run into position as the throw is being delivered.
  • Another, more simplified version of this drill is the Pick to Tag Drill.
