Objective

  • Improve players fielding and footwork.
  • Emphasis should be placed on moving quickly and making good throws.

Equipment

  • Baseballs (1 for each set of partners)
  • Gloves

Description

  • Divide players into partners and line them up along one of the foul lines.
  • Players should start 5-10 feet apart depending on ability.
  • For this drill players players take turns as the infielder and first baseman.
  • Progressions:
    • Player throws ground balls straight to partner (HD video 1)
    • Player throws ground balls to partner's left (HD video 2)
    • Player throws ground balls to partner's right (HD video 3)

Tips

  • Balls do no need to be thrown hard. The idea is to practice getting the body in front of the ball to make a play.
  • For backhands, have feeders roll the ball at different speeds. This will allow their partner to recognize the difference between being able to get in front of certain balls and having to reach for them using the backhand technique.
  • Players acting as infielders should throw the ball using a 4 seam grip and aim for their partner's chest.
